Edible Flowers… Razzle and Dazzle Your Guests

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

What is better than a garden salad? A flower garden salad! The violet patch in the front yard is not just for the bunny rabbits to eat. Violets and other edible flowers are a beautiful way to accentuate luscious cakes and adorn the otherwise plain romaine salad. Flowers have long represented beauty and fertility which make them a necessity for Easter, Birthdays, and baby showers. Below are a few flowers that add color and flavor to your meal.

Pansies

Pansies come in many different shades making them a great option for decoration. They have a subtle taste reminiscent of an iceberg lettuce. While you absolutely can adorn a cake with these beauties, it may be wiser to put them in a salad with a refreshing vinaigrette.

Lavender

Lavender has a slightly sweet flavor and a distinct aroma. The long flower buds look striking when placed around the outside of a tall celebration cake. However, lavender should be used sparingly or else it may taste a bit like your favorite soap.

Roses

Roses contain a slightly acidic taste and are high in antioxidants promoting heart health. At least that is what I tell myself after I eat way too many of these cupcakes covered in roses. To add extra sweetness and for a dewdrop look, you can beat egg whites and sprinkle sugar over the petals. A recipe for crystallized rose petals can be found here.

Violets

Violets have a distinct purple color and a subtle, slightly sweet taste making them perfect for any celebration cake. Your guests will love the addition of violets so much that you may see empty patches in their flower beds next week.

Calendulas

Calendulas have a unique zest to them which makes them appropriate for a spicy salad. They add dimension to vegetable and fruit cakes such as carrot cake. They can even be adorned on top of chicken. Calendulas have a bright yellow color which catches the eye of each guest. The peppery aftertaste will definitely leave a positive impression.

Dandelions

Dandelions that were once considered a pesky weed actually contain surprisingly good flavor while being rich in iron and antioxidants. The leaves of dandelions taste best before the flower grows and becomes bitter afterwards. The dandelion flower has a subtle sweetness perfect for spring cupcakes and strawberry salads.

Flowers are not just for the garden! With a hint of rose, a touch of lavender and a few dandelions, you can create a savory springtime masterpiece sure to win over your guest’s eyes and taste buds. The best way to ensure a fresh salad is not just with beautiful flowers but also with amazing farm-to-table vegetables.
